Site Selection
When it comes to aquaculture, the primary requirement is !!WATER!!, even though we are building a recirculating aquaponics system, its always better to choose a location with plenty of water, keeping that in mind, my site selection process around Chennai city (~100 km radius) took about 29 months starting September 2012 though April 2015. Finally I'am happy with a place 80 km south to Chennai.

Pond Excavation
April 29th 2015, we started excavating the place to construct a 100' x 70' foot wide and ~8' deep pond. Our estimate is, after the overall construction, we should be able to store 1 million liters of water. While digging the pond, we made sure there was a 1'6" slope for the solid waste to slide and enters the filter pump. It took 2 complete weeks to excavate the earth, now we are ready to construct the pond.
April 29th 2015, we started excavating the place to construct a 100' x 70' foot wide and ~8' deep pond. We built 14 independent chambers with shutters and two harvest tanks. I will explain why we built like this in upcoming posts, may be you will have to wait for one full harvest cycle, that is 6 months from now ;'). It took about 3 months to complete the construction and plumbing six 1.5 HP open well submersible motors. Took about 20 days to fill 1 million liters of water.
