Pond Construction

One thousand cubic meter pond construction. End goal is to stock 70 fishes per cubic meter, 50 tonnes of fish annual production

Site Selection

When it comes to aquaculture, the primary requirement is !!WATER!!, even though we are building a recirculating aquaponics system, its always better to choose a location with plenty of water, keeping that in mind, my site selection process around Chennai city (~100 km radius) took about 29 months starting September 2012 though April 2015. Finally I'am happy with a place 80 km south to Chennai.

Pond Excavation

April 29th 2015, we started excavating the place to construct a 100' x 70' foot wide and ~8' deep pond. Our estimate is, after the overall construction, we should be able to store 1 million liters of water. While digging the pond, we made sure there was a 1'6" slope for the solid waste to slide and enters the filter pump. It took 2 complete weeks to excavate the earth, now we are ready to construct the pond.

Pond Construction

We built 14 independent chambers with shutters and two harvest tanks. I will explain why we built like this in upcoming posts, may be you will have to wait for one full harvest cycle, that is 6 months from now ;'). It took about 3 months to complete the construction and plumbing six 1.5 HP open well submersible motors. Took about 20 days to fill 1 million liters of water.
